Welcome to the wonderful world of aquatic plant species!
Many plants are healthy but there are also invasive plant species that can harm a waterway by suffocating it. One of these invasive aquatic plant species is known as a Water Chestnut. These plants multiply rapidly but they are usually easy to spot.
Friends of Forge Pond has participated the last two summers in pulling these Water Chestnuts.
This summer we will be meeting June 5th, July 17th, and August 7th.
We meet at 27 Forge Pond Road Granby, MA and start at 9:30 in the morning. Around 12 we wrap up and have pizza!
We have canoes and kayaks if you need one but if you have your own, that is great. If you do need one let us know ahead of time and we will be happy to lend you one.
Life jackets are a must!
If you have one- awesome! If not, let us know. We supply buckets and rubber gloves and we can show you what water chestnuts look like and how to pull them before you hit the water.
The leaves you see on the surface are called rosettes but the important part to pull is called the seed that is usually hooked towards the bottom of the pond or hooked into other plants. Be careful not to tear the rosettes out without the seed.
Pull the plants up gently to get the whole plant—rosettes, stems, roots. Put them into buckets (as a pre-drain system), and finally into garbage bags. The plants will be piled well away from the water in a designated and approved spot.
Thank you for your help. Please contact Aubree Carr at [email protected] to sign up or to answer your questions! Below is a link to canoeing tips and a waiver you can fill out and bring with you on the day of the pull!
